If you do one thing this weekend, make it the Weekend Roast at Oak Room. Located at The Abu Dhabi EDITION, Oak Room offers a traditional English oak panelled restaurant, celebrating world-class ingredients with British rock ‘n’ roll flair. The décor in Oak Room is as stunning as it is unique, plush velvet British racing green upholstery, dark wooden tables, large golden globe chandeliers and images of rock and roll legends don the walls.
Created by Michelin star Chef Tom Aikens, the Weekend Roast is available on both Fridays and Saturdays from 12.30pm to 4.30pm and includes a 3 hour beverage package. We arrive around 2.00pm and the restaurant is packed with guests all enjoying a deliciously extravagant roast. We opt to skip the pre-dinner drinks at the bar and take a seat in the main dining room.
The menu is presented to us and I must say I am very impressed with the menu, which also caters for vegetarians and vegans, meaning that no family member or friend has to miss out on a Weekend Roast ever again. The menu offers a choice of Roast Beef Sirloin from the trolley, (we will come back to that later) Roasted Lamb Loin stuffed with Spinach and Half Roasted Chicken. For pescatarians the menu offers a Pan Fried Salmon with Lemon Butter and for vegetarians and vegans a Salt Baked Celeriac which consists of honey, macadamia nut and parmesan. All come served with Yorkshire pudding, Cauliflower Cheese, Roasted Potatoes, Green Beans, Roasted Root Vegetables, and Gravy. The Salt Baked Celeriac swaps out the Roasted Root Vegetables and Gravy for Broccoli, Watercress Salad and Horseradish Sauce.
I select the Pan Fried Salmon with Lemon Butter whist my dining companion opts for the Roast Beef Sirloin from the trolley. We enjoy Oak Room’s signature bread and butter whilst we eagerly await our roasts arrival. The plates arrive and feature a plump Yorkshire pudding (which meets official Yorkshire Pudding standards and is 4 inches tall) the Roast Potatoes and for me the Salmon. My dining companions Roast Beef Sirloin arrives on the trolley which is a nice touch and gives us the opportunity to chat to chef, it does also add a bit of culinary theatre to our dining experience.
The Salmon is delicious and flakes off the fork, whilst the Roast Beef melts in the mouth, and the Roast Potatoes, well we could easily just eat a bowl of these they are that good. Even the Green Beans and Roasted Root Vegetables are tasty.
Desserts range from Mixed Berry Trifle, Violet and Chocolate Éclair, Crème Brulee, Apple and Blackberry Crumble and a Selection of British Cheeses. As we are reviewing the Weekend Roast and our commitment to giving our readers a full overview of our experience is paramount, we opt to try a little of each of the desserts and cheeses (I know, this level of commitment is hard to come by lol). We are in some debate about the final stage of our dining experience, I would probably recommend the cheeses, I really enjoy the range of cheeses, the chutney and the crackers although my dining companion is adamant that the sweet selection isn’t to be rivalled.
Quintessential, considered and modern, the generous menu at this new-age steakhouse encourages guests to indulge in the very best produce, free from formality. Uncomplicated in approach, the menu consistently showcases signature British dishes, paired with a robust beverage selection. Here, theatre is not saved for the kitchen- it is constantly on show, with a frosted glass-fronted butchery to enhance the diner’s senses and assert the importance of the restaurant’s quality produce. Private dining is also available at Oak Room, with a warm and intimate 10-person room available for group bookings.
Would we return to Oak Room? Yes! In a heartbeat. The Weekend Roast is spectacular, and we would definitely return again for this, but we wouldn’t rule out dinner one evening either. We would recommend the Weekend Roast for families, couples or groups of friends.
The Weekend Roast is available Fridays and Saturdays, 12.30pm to 4.30pm and is priced at AED 250 per person for soft beverages, AED 388 per person for selected beverages and AED 488 per person with bubbles.
